SUMMARY:New art opening:  Brett Laffert May 3rd
DESCRIPTION:Brett Laffert is a self-taught artist whose creative journey has been anything but ordinary. Born and raised as one of five children in Granville\, Massachusetts\, Brett first began dabbling in art during his time living on Nantucket Island. What began as a casual experiment — a glass kit passed along by a friend — evolved into a passion for mosaic-style stained glass. Unlike traditional stained glass\, Brett’s technique allows for intricate patterns using smaller pieces\, grouted onto existing glass to achieve remarkable detail. \nBy trade\, Brett spent over a decade as a culinary chef\, owning and operating Coriander Café in Eastford\, Connecticut. When the COVID-19 pandemic brought about major life changes\, he leaned further into his creative side\, expanding into pen and ink drawing\, painting\, and photography alongside his glass work. In 2021\, Brett relocated to the Asheville\, North Carolina area to pursue art more seriously\, working at Mantiques in Brevard\, where he also developed a deep appreciation for vintage goods and curiosities. \nThe sale of Mantiques in 2024 proved a pivotal moment\, inspiring Brett to open his own studio\, Filtered Light\, named for the way sunlight transforms through stained glass. There\, he created daily\, often inspired by nature and history — from the elegance of birds to the grandeur of woolly mammoths and the mystery of deep-sea divers. \nHis first solo show\, “Filtered Light at The Canteen”\, marks a significant milestone. When asked about the opportunity\, Brett shared\, “It’s pretty exciting! I’ve had work in exhibits before\, but never a solo show. It’s exciting and a little intimidating.” \nWhile Brett is currently transitioning back to Massachusetts to care for family\, he hopes to return to the mountains of North Carolina\, the place he calls “home\,” to continue creating. \nToday\, Brett’s work spans mosaic glass\, pen and ink\, painting\, and photography — all tied together by a common thread: a deep reverence for life’s simple beauty and the filtered light that reveals it.

DESCRIPTION:This event is at capacity if the show is held indoors.  You can now register for our waiting list.  If weather permits the event to be held outdoors\, we will have double our indoor capacity.\n \nGrupo los Santos is a NYC-based funky\, rootsy\, weirdly eclectic jam-band which pulls equally from the traditions of jazz\, rock\, funk\, Afro-Cuban\, Afro-Brazilian\, and whatever else they come across.\nFormed in 1998\, Santos currently consist of electric guitar\, electric bass\, drums\, and tap dance/body percussion\, often augmented with Afro-Cuban batá drums. They are currently releasing their fourth album\, Santos 4.\nGrupo los Santos will not only perform a set for us\, but also lead folks in a workshop beforehand. DESCRIPTION:Afro-Latin Jazz Workshop with Santos4tet \n(all musicians and tap dancers welcome!) \nSantos4tet (aka Grupo los Santos) will present a 90 minute Afro-Latin Jazz workshop for instrumentalists and tap dancers of all levels\, doing a deep-dive into “A Gozar con mi Combo”\, a classic descarga by Israel “Cachao” Lopez.  Containing most of the important elements of this music\, the band will break apart and teach the individual threads that make up this composition\, covering clave\, harmony\, melody\, coro\, song form\, tumbao\, montuno\, call and response parts\, cascara\, abenico\, as well as approaches to improvisation.  Charts and worksheets will be provided and workshop will be conducted in English and Spanish\, as needed.  Attendees will be encouraged to play and experiment with the concepts as they’re being presented. \nThis workshop is Free of charge\, but spots are limited\, so please reserve your place by registering at Afro-Latin Jazz Workshop with Santos4tet – Cedar Mountain Canteen.  Thank you!

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a night of music from Owen Grooms and Bradford Carson\, otherwise known as The Steel String Regulators. Bradford is a multi-instrumentalist who plays everything from old time to blues\, jazz and rock and roll. Many styles of music influence his sound simply because there is good music everywhere. Bradford was raised in Virginia and grew up singing\, playing the piano\, and listening to anything from Hendrix to Mozart. He gradually picked up brass instruments and strings while learning bits about theory and recording\, eventually attending Musician’s Institute\, Longwood University\, and Virginia Commonwealth University. He has since been performing\, teaching\, and recording regionally. \nWe will be hosting a potluck dinner this evening.  Please bring a non-disposable place setting and a covered dish.  If you don’t have food to bring for any reason\, we are happy to feed you.  We are a pack it in\, pack it out public house and ask you take everything you bring in\, out with you.  Many thanks.

SUMMARY:Owen Grooms Music Series Presents Bruce Threlkeld & Community Potluck
DESCRIPTION:Bruce’s musical roots can be traced back to the 1950’s and include a love of Pop\, Rock\,\nCountry\, Bluegrass and Reggae. He started his musical career at 16\, drumming in a cover band\nand picked up guitar a couple years later. In college Bruce began performing regularly and\nonce opened a show for the legendary B.B. King. After graduating he joined up with his buddy\nRick Taylor to form the Atlanta-based Indie Rock band\, Right as Rain.\nThis band released two albums on DB Records. Right as Rain\nperformed at the historic CBGB’s in New York City and Austin’s South\nby Southwest music festival. \nOn Tour with Right as Rain\nAfter leaving Atlanta for the west\, Bruce spent 1997-2011 playing and\nrecording with multiple regional Montana bands. At the same time\, he\ncontinued to work on his solo act. In 2010 he released Acousticana\, his first album of original\ntunes. The next ten years\, Bruce performed along Florida’s Treasure\ncoast. In 2019\, Bruce opened for John McEuen\, of the iconic Nitty\nGritty Dirt Band. John invited Bruce up to join in the encore\, Will The\nCircle be Unbroken—truly a memorable musical experience. \nBruce is currently working on an album of original songs to be\nreleased in fall\, 2022. These songs blend a serving of rootsy folk with a dash of electric guitar\,\ncovered in a twangy Americana sauce\, a combination inspired by musical heroes—The\nBeatles\, Bill Monroe\, Bob Marley\, Flatt and Scruggs\, Bruce Cockburn\, Dan Fogelberg\, and\nmore. He enjoys mixing traditional acoustic classics with originals\, old country and quirky\nobscure tunes that you need to hear. Come see what he’s all about. DESCRIPTION:Hazel Ketchum is the Artistic Director for Mountain School of Strings and Music Teacher at Rosman Middle & High School where she teaches Chorus\, Guitar and Appalachian Music. Hazel plays guitar\, lute\, drums\, banjo\, fiddle\, piano\, sings and is a composer. Hazel is most recently back from a tour in Ecuador where she performed with The Orchestra Jovin and taught a workshop in Appalachian Music & Dance. You can hear Hazel locally with The Harrows with Bob Culver. \nWe are a listening venue. During our live music performances\, we ask that you practice kindness towards our artists by keeping your conservation to a minimum and listen respectfully to our amazing artists.
