Appalshop  ( YouTube channel )

Appalachian culture by the people, for the people. That’s how I would describe this incredible resource. Music, yes, but much more — dance, crafts, social and economic justice, foodways, … — the whole package. I have mentioned the radio station and the music podcast/show before. There is also the record label, June Appal, which has released (and preserved) some of the best of our old time music. But the video archive is the deepest and most rewarding part of their legacy, not just documenting history but creating time capsules of points along the way. Check out this montage from 1973, scored with the music of I. D. Stamper and others, and ending with candid footage of a mountain dance.
