Join us for an evening of great music and food as we celebrate the new year with Pretty Little Goat and a community potluck! This is a fundraising event to help the Canteen replenish our community supported arts fund! We need to raise $70,000 to keep our current music schedule going! The event is free thanks to a donation from some members of our community. Please join us and help us raise the funds to keep our musicians working.

Pretty Little Goat is grassroots music at its finest. The band formed in 2013 through their common grounding in the deep well of local tradition found in the mountains of Western North Carolina. As young lovers of old-time music, Pretty Little Goat began winning string band competitions right away. Over the last 12 years, the band has developed a unique sound, writing music inspired by the mountains and the musical traditions therein.

Members of the band are dedicated mentors to the next generation of musicians. Always looking for new and exciting ways to inspire young people, they have been deeply involved in the local JAM (Junior Appalachian Musicians) program, music camps, schools and more.

Pretty Little Goat sees traditional music is a living art form; vibrant and evolving. Their debut self-titled album released in 2016 presents unique interpretations of old-time songs and tunes along with original material. The Goats’ second album, “Let The Sun Shine In,” is full of groovy original music that is “as close as we will ever be to our past while being as current as we need it to be” (Mike Ashworth, Steep Canyon Rangers).”

The Goat’s third album “Big Storm” continues the saga with an album of catchy original and traditional music that is sure to stick with you. Most recently, “Southland” is an album where the band has really start to hit their stride. Includes a whole slew of new, catchy, original songs and tunes, mixed with traditional fiddle music featuring Madeline Dierauf.

Recent venues and festivals include: Mountain Song Festival, Merlefest, Charlotte Whitewater Center, Steccoah Valley Performing Arts Center, Isis Music Hall, The Grey Eagle, Asheville Cider Fest, Sierra Nevada Brewery (NC), Oskar Blues Brewery (NC), almost every brewery in the Asheville area, Firefly Festival (Delaware), South Carolina State Fiddler’s competition, White Squirrel Festival, Barley’s Knoxville, WNCW Studio B.

Potluck

We will be hosting a potluck dinner this evening. Please bring a non-disposable place setting and a covered dish. If you don’t have food to bring for any reason, we are happy to feed you. We are a pack it in, pack it out public house and ask you take everything you bring in, out with you. Many thanks.

Canteen Drop

Every year we hoist a canteen up our flagpole and drop it to celebrate the coming of the new year. We will host the drop after the band plays. This is always hilarious.
