It’s April, time for the annual Transylvania County poetry contest (for non-poets) open to residents of all ages.  Every year we have a theme and this year’s theme is unsung heroes of our country’s independence.  We’re focused on our country’s upcoming 250th birthday next year, and during 2025-26, the City of Brevard will host events leading up to the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
Unsung heroes come in all colors and ages — some are young people, African Americans, women, older adults, and others — who have not received sufficient recognition but were important to securing our independence. Tell a story about one of these people and help us all learn a more balanced story of our nation’s beginning.
