Kathryn took her job as a social worker in the ER of a regional hospital because she
was desperate for the health insurance. The high-stakes environment left her unable to
cry, hypervigilant about safety, and emotionally detached from family and friends.
Discovering that retirement alone did not heal her inner emotional landscape, she set
out on a quest to understand the impact of her career on her mental health. Slowly she
is regaining her relationship with curiosity, joy, and the bonds that make us human.
Kathryn lives in Athens, Georgia, where she facilitates a continuing education class,
runs a summer film series, and participates in meditation and poetry groups. She and
her husband have a place in Cedar Mt., and love to bike and hike the trails, watch
critters, and come to the Canteen for music, brews, and fellowship.
