Paul Brown is one of those unknown national treasures. (I mean – come on! He’s got a Wikipedia page!) Unlike other unsung heroes behind the scenes of old time music, you’ll probably recognize his voice when you hear it because from 1999 to 2013 he worked for NPR in DC and was often heard on-air. The link above is to his wonderful programs on WFDD, out of Winston-Salem.
There are more worthwhile nuggets on
his personal web page. Before WFDD, Paul was at the important Mt. Airy station,
WPAQ and helped compile a brilliant musical anthology from their “vaults.”
I saw Paul at Mt. Airy last weekend and — surprise, surprise — he was documenting a jam session that included Chester MacMillan and Rich Hartness.
His
Bandcamp is worth checking out, but doesn’t begin to cover all the recording he has done. Wikipedia lists 11 others!
