Mark’s Collection of Old Time Music Resources

Mark, our Old Time Music host, has quite a collection of resources. Enjoy!

Old Time Resource of the Week:  JoeBass’s YouTube playlist Joe “JoeBass” DeJarnette is a famous character in the contemporary old time scene.  Mainly known as a bass player, producer, and engineer, I think.  He has compiled a killer list of old time source recordings that we can all benefit from listening to.

Old Time Resource of the Week:   Remembering the Old Songs    I love knowing the background and history behind songs and tunes.  Lyle Lofgren’s and Bob Waltz’s little essays cover mostly songs but some show up in our sessions, like Angeline the Baker, Lofgren is no longer with us, but he was one of ...

Old Time Resource of the Week:  Zepp Music Another banjo-centric resource.  Don Zepp has created many, many videos of old time tunes played on banjos from his long-since-gone music store.  The tunes are the ones we play a lot and make a great reference library.  His website is also vintage!  But it has even ...

Old Time Resource of the Week:  Folkstreams As they describe themselves, “Folkstreams is a non-profit dedicated to finding, preserving, contextualizing, and showcasing documentary films on American traditional cultures.” There is plenty for the old time music fan here and plenty more beyond that. Check out the music pages to get started.  Then explore on your own. ...

Old Time Resource of the Week:  WPAQ   When we lived in Winston-Salem, WPAQ was just an AM radio station out of Mt. Airy.  We could pick it up barely well enough to listen but we listened faithfully.  The founder, Ralph Epperly, was still with us then and he was thoroughly committed to ...

Old Time Resource of the Week:  American Songcatcher   This informative podcast featuring traditional music is hosted by musicologist/musician Nicholas Edward Williams.  If you only listen to one episode, I recommend the deep dive into the history of  Moses Asch and Folkways Records.  (That’s a Spotify link; check your favorite podcatcher.)  Nick also was the ...

Old Time Resource of the Week:  Deep In TraditionThis is a radio show from WMMT in Whitesburg, KY, also available as a podcast.  Past shows are available, too. The show is associated with the venerable Appalshop, also worth checking out.  What you’ll hear on the show is a mix of old 78s, live performances by ...

I have promoted at least one podcast here before.  This week I’m throwing out several that I just learned about.  They look promising.  Help me check’em out. Meg Wobus Beller – Fiddle Studio – talkin’ ’bout fiddlin’ Ozark Highlands Radio – live traditional music with a live audience – listen online or find it as ...

Old Time Resource of the Week:  Slippery Hill YouTube Channel I featured the Slippery Hill website some time ago as a repository of source recordings of fiddle tunes.  Recently I have discovered their YouTube channel, which has a lot of additional resources, including dubs of cassettes from the 80s, like this one from a party ...

Old Time Resource of the Week:  Old Time Backup GuitarA bit of a departure, this site is primarily selling a book on, er, old time backup guitar.  I haven’t seen the book but the samples look interesting — tablature transcriptions from actual old source recordings. But there are other good resources there, too. The Music! page ...

Old Time Resource of the Week:  Pegram Jam This resource is well-known to some of you. This living room jam in Pegram, Tennessee, just west of Nashville, ran from 2001 to 2007 and lives on in the form of the excellent resources they developed and shared with each other.  Do check it out.

Fiddler George Jackson and mandolinist Tristan Scroggins came up with the idea of recording sort of a “top 100” fiddle tunes in one mammoth recording session.  Here’s how they describe the project on the Bandcamp page: Have you ever wondered what tunes to learn next, or what some good tunes to learn ...
