Mark’s Collection of Old Time Music Resources

Mark, our Old Time Music host, has quite a collection of resources. Enjoy!

Old Time Resource of the Week:  Dust to Digital Radio Dust-to-Digital is a wonderful record label.  They have recently launched an Internet radio station which streams music from their massive archive of recordings from around the globe.  Look for the player widget on their home page. It’s not all string band music, nor ...

Old Time Resource of the Week:  The Henry Reed Collection What a wonder that this collection exists.  Folklorist and fiddler Alan Jabbour interviewed, documented, transcribed, learned, propagated, and preserved as much as he could of Henry Reed, an amazing player from West Virginia.  Reed was born in 1884 and so the tunes he heard growing up ...

Old Time Resource of the Week:  Slower Than Dirt For some reason there’s a heck of a lot of old time music on the West Coast.  This site from Seattle has a wealth of tunes and other resources, many of which you’ll recognize from my earlier posts.  Peruse this extensive site; I think you’ll ...

Old Time Resource of the Week:  FiddleStar YouTube channel Megan Lynch Chowning is a really good fiddler and all-around musician.  But she also is a great teacher and hosts several music camps.  Two more things that make her worth checking out — she is thoughtful and hilarious.  And smart — that makes three ...

Old Time Resource of the Week:  Soundcloud This will take some digging and experimenting on your part, but there are some gems buried here.  Any keywords you search for will return as many puzzling false hits as actual old time music.  I had pretty good luck with “fiddle banjo”  You could also search for song titles.  ...

Old Time Resource of the Week:  Adam Hurt’s Online Jam YouTube channel Wow!  What a good resource for learning and playing tunes.  The one I watched had Adam on fiddle and Beth Hartness on guitar.  They played eleven D tunes, many of which we play.  The others would be welcome additions.  I counted 22 episodes lasting ...

Old Time Resource of the Week:  Old Time Music on Bandcamp Bandcamp, if you haven’t explored it, is like its own Internet of music, pretty much outside the world of the major labels.  Consequently, a good place for “our” music.  You can listen and you can purchase and you’ll be supporting musicians in ...

Old Time Resource of the Week:  Ballad of America This ambitious organization seeks to make America’s diverse musical heritage an integral part of our youth’s education.  The very well-organized website includes a page on old time music with lots of good information and links, including YouTube and Spotify playlists.

Old Time Resource of the Week:  Mary Gordon and Hilary Dirlam Present What better resource to feature this week?!  Many of you have well-thumbed copies of these books.  This will help them get into the hands of the next generation and beyond.  Mary says the website isn’t quite finished yet but it looks great as is.  Bookmark ...

Old Time Resource of the Week:  YouTube channel of Dave Wells Oh, man, does he have some choice videos on his channel!  The ones with Greg Hooven and Rose Sinclair drew me in, but there are many, many other great ones, mostly campground jams from the late 1980s at Galax, Mt. Airy, Clifftop, Rockbridge, and more.  The channel isn’t 100% old ...

Old Time Resource of the Week:  DrDosido ( Paul L. Tyler ) This site has an impressive set of resources and recordings.  Tyler is a Midwest-based folklorist and musician.  It is heavy on Midwestern music, as you’d expect, but there are plenty of Southern and Southern-styled fiddlers on the page Fiddlers From Here and There.

Old Time Resource of the Week:  The Old-Time Jam website This site promises to play accompaniment to old time tunes so you can play along.  It’s associated with the Brainjo Academy.  The Jam site appears to be free, with membership options that let you download MP3s and other stuff.
