Old Time Resource of the Week:  Adam Hurt’s Online Jam YouTube channel Wow!  What a good resource for learning and playing tunes.  The one I watched had Adam on fiddle and Beth Hartness on guitar.  They played eleven D tunes, many of which we play.  The others would be welcome additions.  I counted 22 episodes lasting ...

Old Time Resource of the Week:  Old Time Music on Bandcamp Bandcamp, if you haven’t explored it, is like its own Internet of music, pretty much outside the world of the major labels.  Consequently, a good place for “our” music.  You can listen and you can purchase and you’ll be supporting musicians in ...

Old Time Resource of the Week:  Ballad of America This ambitious organization seeks to make America’s diverse musical heritage an integral part of our youth’s education.  The very well-organized website includes a page on old time music with lots of good information and links, including YouTube and Spotify playlists.

Old Time Resource of the Week:  Mary Gordon and Hilary Dirlam Present What better resource to feature this week?!  Many of you have well-thumbed copies of these books.  This will help them get into the hands of the next generation and beyond.  Mary says the website isn’t quite finished yet but it looks great as is.  Bookmark ...

Old Time Resource of the Week:  YouTube channel of Dave Wells Oh, man, does he have some choice videos on his channel!  The ones with Greg Hooven and Rose Sinclair drew me in, but there are many, many other great ones, mostly campground jams from the late 1980s at Galax, Mt. Airy, Clifftop, Rockbridge, and more.  The channel isn’t 100% old ...

Old Time Resource of the Week:  DrDosido ( Paul L. Tyler ) This site has an impressive set of resources and recordings.  Tyler is a Midwest-based folklorist and musician.  It is heavy on Midwestern music, as you’d expect, but there are plenty of Southern and Southern-styled fiddlers on the page Fiddlers From Here and There.

Old Time Resource of the Week:  The Old-Time Jam website This site promises to play accompaniment to old time tunes so you can play along.  It’s associated with the Brainjo Academy.  The Jam site appears to be free, with membership options that let you download MP3s and other stuff.

Old Time Resource of the Week:  Jam Etiquette   I ran across a very interesting video of two bluegrassers discussing jam etiquette.  It’s not a new topic and there are a lot of web pages covering it but I heard some things in the video that went a little deeper. I really want to highlight the discussion of circle ...

Old Time Resource of the Week:  Folkways Records Old Time catalog Scanning through the cover images, I was amazed at how many of them I’ve owned over the years.  What an incredible resource!  They’re partnered with the Smithsonian now and you can listen to or download albums or single tracks through their very cool website.  ...

Old Time Resource of the Week:  Knoxville Old Time Wow!  Who knew?  Knoxville has one of the best looking and full-featured websites for old time music I’ve seen.  It focuses on the Knoxville area, of course, but there is a lot of good information. The Resources page is very extensive and well-organized.  Do check it ...

Old Time Resource of the Week:  The Folk Revival ProjectA fascinating film clip, obviously colorized, showed up in my YouTube temptations.  I bit and it was worth it.  Here’s how they describe the project: The main purpose of this channel is to restore rare and authentic recordings of traditional music, and present them ...

Old Time Resource of the Week:  Will and Deni McIntyre’s YouTube channel Will and Deni have been working behind the scenes for years filming and producing high-quality programs and documentaries about music and culture, most notably the PBS programs for David Holt and, most recently, Rhiannon Giddens.  Their channel has a wealth of other interesting content ...
